Join us for the Our Community, Our Health (OCOH) national town hall meeting on diabetes.
On Thursday, November 29th, UF HealthStreet will be hosting a panel of experts from the University of Florida, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the Right Care Alliance to discuss the diabetes epidemic and the uncontrolled cost of insulin.
This interactive town hall will:
- Describe current diabetes research on Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
- Discuss the growing prevalence of diabetes and whether funding for research is keeping pace.
- Address the rising cost of insulin and what our communities can do about it.
Meet the panel:
Dr. Haller is a pediatric endocrinologist with a passion for patient care, teaching, and research. Dr. Haller’s research focuses on predicting, preventing, and reversing type 1 diabetes through a team approach that emphasizes translating findings from the laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside in a timely manner. Dr. Haller is an active investigator in the NIH funded Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet and The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in Youth (TEDDY) study.
Dr. Southwick is a professor of medicine and an infectious disease specialist at the University of Florida. He is a creator of innovative approaches for preventing medical errors that result in patient injuries and deaths. He is the co-founder of the Gainesville chapter of the Empowered Patient Coalition and a chapter leader for Right Care Alliance in Gainesville.
Dr. Williams is an assistant professor of medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in the Division of General Internal Medicine and the Center for Advancing Population Science (CAPS). She is a health services researcher focused on disparities related to chronic disease management in vulnerable populations. She has expertise in implementing clinical trials to test behavioral and technology-based interventions among low-income, minority, and rural residents with poorly controlled Type 2 diabetes.
Our moderator will be Desmond Schatz, MD
Dr. Schatz is a professor and Associate Chairman of Pediatrics, Medical Director of the UF Diabetes Institute, and Associate Director of the Clinical Research Center, at the University of Florida. He has been involved in Type 1 diabetes research since the mid-80s and has published over 260 manuscripts, the majority related to the prediction, natural history, genetics, immunopathogenesis and prevention of the disease, as well as the management of Type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents.
